One word:FOOD
Plants have many relations with the animals in their ecosystem:cocroaches clean the soil, bacteria live in their roots and ladybugs attack pest insects.
All the services in nature are already there, so it doesn't make sense to create technology that does the same.
So maybe, just maybe, bring pesticide to Mars.
